Is B Corp worth the effort?
A question I get asked many times by clients and associates who are interested in the certification but have been left undecided on hearing just how much effort is required to go into getting certified, it certainly isn’t for the faint hearted…
But that’s the point…anything worth having isn’t easy to achieve.
Being a B Corp provides the proof point that you as a business are doing what you say you are doing – for us that’s creating the best business we possibly can and setting out to make our business count as a force for good.
The process in a nutshell – choose your track and take the B Corp assessment, submit your assessment and await review, then review and evaluation and ultimately verification. Sounds straight forward enough, but beware with 200 questions to answer in great detail, and sub answers behind these B Labs will work you hard to drill into the details, to challenge you to ensure you are considering everything possible in your business, and that your focus and vision is on simply more than making money…
We have just completed our re-certification; it took 10 months from submitting to certification and what has changed for us since original certification?
Our score this time is 150.3 (a significant improvement upon our original 124.3 score) which is a huge deal for us as a business.
(Median score for ordinary business 50.9 and 80 points qualifies for B Corp certification…)
This score is important to us as it shows progress, it shows a direction of travel and our continuous improvement.
I am told we happen to have become the highest scoring B Corp printing company on the planet, which is also nice to hear and shows that we really are pushing our industry forward.
Is B Corp for you? If you want to create a better business, then absolutely yes.
Will it be hard work? Absolutely yes.
Will it be worth it? I can only say by our own experiences and is Seacourt a significantly better business now then before we embarked on our B Corp adventure? Absolutely 100%.
